WIC Food Packages

WIC Food Packages

As part of the WIC program, Pregnant and postpartum women and children (under 5 years of age) receive nutritious food packages. WIC's goal is to encourage moms to breastfeed without supplementing with infant formula. What's in your food package depends on how much you are breast feeding and how much infant formula your baby may get from WIC. Eligibility for WIC food packages begins as soon as pregnancy is confirmed. Infants can receive supplementary formula milk if they are partially breastfed or not breastfed at all, up to their first birthday. Starting at six months, infants receive a variety of nutritious foods including infant cereals, fruits, vegetables, and other appropriate infant foods.

What's in Your WIC Food Package

FULLY BREAST/CHESTFEEDING FOOD PACKAGE: Moms who breastfeed their babies and do not get infant formula from WIC receive what's called a fully breastfeeding food package. It has more food and a larger variety of foods than food packages that include infant formula. This package has milk, juice, cereal, eggs, fruits and vegetables, whole wheat bread and other whole grains, canned fish, legumes, peanut butter, and cheese. When their babies are 6-12 months old, these moms also get baby food meats in addition to greater amounts of baby food fruits, and vegetables.

PARTIALLY BREAST/CHESTFEEDING FOOD PACKAGE: Breastfeeding moms who feed their baby mostly breast milk, but also some infant formula from WIC, get what's known as a partially breastfeeding food package. This package includes milk, juice, cereal, eggs, fruits and vegetables, whole wheat bread and other whole grains, legumes, and peanut butter.
